HBCU Smart Cities Challenge Showcase

Celebrating Black History Month with students who are building the future, Pathway Community Foundation is excited to host the HBCU Smart Cities Challenge Showcase in partnership with the City of Winston-Salem and Winston-Salem State University on February 18th at 10 am.

Being held at Winston-Salem State University’s Albert H. Anderson Center and open to the public, this exciting smart cities event presents 30 HBCU (Historically Black College and University) students from across the country pitching their innovative technology solutions for specific challenges related to water management, transportation, agriculture, and interconnectivity faced by Tier 2 - Tier 4 southern cities.

Eight teams of students from twelve schools who participated in the HBCU Smart Cities Challenge will be pitching their prototype to a live audience of students, national business and community leaders and a team of judges for cash prizes.

There will also be an emerging technology showcase for middle school, high school, community college, and HBCU students featuring Winston-Salem State University students and local companies showcasing their cutting-edge technology.

We’re especially excited to partner with forward-thinking companies that are committed to advancing HBCUs and smart city technology. Our premier sponsors Mastercard, Amazon, Goler CDC, RCS Wireless, and Turnberry Premiere are providing career opportunities and resources to students attending the Showcase.

The event will also feature guest speakers Winston-Salem State University’s Provost, Dr. Anthony Graham, and National League of Cities’ Director, Dr. Robert Blaine to elaborate on the theme of HBCU Communities as Hubs of Innovation: how the infrastructure and human capital within HBCUs are well positioned to meet the urgent needs of the nation’s cities.
